Each year, thousands of families head out to their local campgrounds. Camping can be a fun and low cost activity however, not everyone lives near a campground or state park. But backyard camping can be a fun alternative, especially in the evening.
Although camping in your backyard may not seem glamorous, it can be a fun and exciting adventure for your children. Backyard camping is popular for many reasons, one being how easy it is. Another reason is safety. Staying in familiar territory will give you peace of mind since you already know what to expect from your neighborhood.
Plan just as you would if you were going to a campground. Proper planning will prevent you from having to go inside your home, which you should avoid as much as possible. At the minimum you’ll need a tent, sleeping bags and items for cooking/eating. A tent is a good investment because you can use it over many years if it’s kept in good condition between uses. Sleeping bags or air mattresses are an essential part of any camping trip, along with some blankets and a favorite pillow. I’ve included some of my favorite camping gear that can be bought easily at amazon.
You’ve got your gear, you’ve pitched your tent and set up your backyard. Now the fun begins! Build a small campfire, roast marshmallows, make ‘smores and play games like I Spy or charades.
Explore your backyard for critters and insects, especially at night when you would normally be inside your home. Gather some leaves, pinecones and rocks as mementos from your “camping trip”.
