Backyard Camping Under The Stars

Each year, thousands of families head out to their local campgrounds. Camping can be a fun and low cost activity however, not everyone lives near a campground or state park. But backyard camping can be a fun alternative, especially in the evening.

Backyard Camping

Although camping in your backyard may not seem glamorous, it can be a fun and exciting adventure for your children. Backyard camping is popular for many reasons, one being how easy it is. Another reason is safety. Staying in familiar territory will give you peace of mind since you already know what to expect from your neighborhood.

Plan just as you would if you were going to a campground. Proper planning will prevent you from having to go inside your home, which you should avoid as much as possible. At the minimum you’ll need a tent, sleeping bags and items for cooking/eating. A tent is a good investment because you can use it over many years if it’s kept in good condition between uses. Sleeping bags or air mattresses are an essential part of any camping trip, along with some blankets and a favorite pillow. I’ve included some of my favorite camping gear that can be bought easily at amazon.

You’ve got your gear, you’ve pitched your tent and set up your backyard. Now the fun begins! Build a small campfire, roast marshmallows, make ‘smores and play games like I Spy or charades.

Explore your backyard for critters and insects, especially at night when you would normally be inside your home. Gather some leaves, pinecones and rocks as mementos from your “camping trip”.

Growing up, I did a lot of camping with my Grandfather. I made sure when my son was growing, that he would have the same outdoor experiences and we camped out all the time. I have some fond memories! 🙂

I remember my son getting a tent for his birthday when he was little. His very first ‘camping’ trip was in the backyard. He wasn’t very old, so he didn’t make it outside all night but it brings a smile to my face when I remember. I never thought about making a campfire and roasting marshmallows. It is too dry to make one here, but a firepit would work, too. It would definitely be a fun thing to do!

In the home my son bought recently is ideal for camping out . He had alot of land with a pond nearby. Plenty of space if you want to camp out and have a bonfire and roast marshmellos – and you dont have to drive or rent a lot space.

I’ve never been a big fan of roughing it, lol, but in my own backyard, I might try it. But it would not involve avoiding the house! The close proximity of a bathroom would be a huge selling point to me, lol.

As a kid we would clothespin blankets over our huge swingset (minus the swings) and the whole groups of neighborhood kids would camp out! This brings back happy, happy memories.

Backyard camping is great. If someone gets scared or it rains or they want to go to bed in the house they can easily. It is also great practice for ‘real’ camping!

  23. RT says:

We are adults and camp out in the backyard all the time in the summer. First, it’s romantic and alot cooler in hot weather, and lasting it’s a great way to unplug!

  24. Jennifer V says:

My kids love to go backyard camping! Now that the weather is getting warmer, we need to get out the tent and waterproof it.

Yup, you don’t need a huge RV and a $1,000. gas budget to go camping, backyard campouts are great! Also, a campout under the dining room table can be a great sleepover idea!
